Why K9 Scent Detection Works : The Nose Knows
Humans have about 5 million scent receptors, dogs have upwards of 200 million. In other words, a canine's sense of smell allows them to detect odors that we cannot sniff out. Not only do they have noses for picking up more scents then us but, their brains are better designed to process and compartmentalize the information from their noses. We have associated the scents of narcotics with their favorite reward so they are always eager to do their job. Our dogs have great sniffers and they have been bred from long lines of working dogs. They know what their job is, they love to do it, and we love to assist them in completing their task!
